Learning outcomes

This course will introduce students to many frequently used English words and phrases and will give them a basic understanding of English. It will also teach you to read and write simple words and sentences in English and to hold simple conversations and answer some questions in English including:

• Personal details e.g. introducing yourself, asking and answering questions about where you and other people live and interests

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for people who have very little or no understanding of English but want to learn. The course will mainly focus on developing English speaking skills but will also include some teaching on reading and writing in English.

Course structure

You will learn with your teacher and other students through live online lessons.

Course duration

This course runs for 12 weeks.  Each lesson is 2 hours long per week. There is a short break after 1 hour.  You will access the live lesson via Zoom.  Your teacher will email you all the information to successfully enter the ‘classroom’.   There will be an expectation from your teacher to complete, at least, 2 hours a week of private study. Your teacher will help you with this.

Practical details

You will enter the lesson via a Zoom link. You must have access to the internet either via a laptop or a desktop with a stable connection.

Course content

The course will consist of twelve live lessons that aim to improve your ability to communicate more effectively in a wide range of settings. Examples of what we will cover include:

• Introducing yourself to others and being able to read and write your own name in English.

• Talking about your family and asking other people about their families

• Learning numbers and being able to read and write numbers up to 100

• Going shopping or working in a shop. Learn the English names for popular shopping items and practise phrases and words for buying and selling these items.

How will I be assessed?

There will be a great deal of interaction, throughout all the lessons, between you, your teacher and the other members of the course. Your teacher will be assessing your ability in every lesson through your answers and contributions. There will also be written tasks which will be assessed by your teacher who will give personalised feedback. At the end of the course, your teacher will write a short report on how you have progressed on the course.
