Preparation for IELTS

Learning outcomes

This course is designed to help students prepare for the IELTS test. IELTS is the English language test required by non-English-speaking countries to enter universities in the UK, US and Australia. The IELTS must be passed in all four language skills – writing, speaking, reading and listening. Overseas universities require an IELTS minimum band score of 6.5, and some require 7.5. You can check this with the university you are applying to.

Who is this course for?

The course is designed for students who have a reasonably good understanding of spoken and written English who want to pass the IELTS test.

This course mainly focusses on IELTS  Academic, but anyone interested in IELTS General Training can also join our IELTS preparation course as the tips and strategy apply to IELTS General Training.

Course format

You will learn with your teacher and other students through a mixture of live online lessons and eLearning.

Course duration

This course will last for 12 weeks.  You will have a two hour lesson each week with a short break after the first hour.

Course requirements

The course is designed for students who have a reasonably good understanding of spoken and written English who want to pass the IELTS test.  The course is designed for B1 C3 learners (ie students who have a reasonably good understanding of written and spoken English). Your teacher may expect you to complete at least two hours of private study a week. Your teacher will help you with this.

Practical details

You will access the live lesson via Zoom.  Your teacher will email you all the information you need to successfully enter the ‘classroom’.

Course content

The course content is designed by the British Council and is split into four modules:

Module 1: Listening skills

Our experienced 2Succeed teachers will lead live lessons to help you improve your listening skills.  It will include:

1. Understanding main ideas and factual information

2. Recognising the opinions, attitudes and accent of a speaker

3. Following a line of argument

Module 2: Writing skills

Our experienced 2Succeed teachers will lead live lessons to teach you techniques and strategies to improve your English writing skills.  It will include:

1. Writing an appropriate response

2. Planning and organising ideas

3. Using a range of vocabulary with correct spelling and grammar

4. Understanding and interpreting charts, maps and data

Module 3: Speaking skills

Our experienced 2Succeed teachers will lead live lessons to teach you techniques and strategies to improve your English language speaking ability.  It will include:

1. Communicating opinions and information on everyday topics and experiences

2. Speaking at length on a given topic

3. Organising your ideas in a logical manner

4. Analysing, discussing, justifying and speculating about various issues

Module 4: Reading skills

Our experienced 2Succeed teachers will lead live lessons to teach you techniques and strategies to improve your English language reading ability.  It will include:

1. Gaining a good understanding of the material

2. Understanding inferences, opinion, attitudes and implied meaning

3. Following the line of argument

How will I be assessed?

There will be a great deal of interaction, throughout all of the lessons, between you, your teacher and the other students on the course.  There will be the opportunity to answer IELTS style questions.
